Selina Kyle is an
oppressed secretary to her boss Max Shreck. She struggles with her own title as
“secretary” as she often mentions that she is an “executive assistant” because
she goes above and beyond the duties of any normal secretary. After her
discovery of Shreck’s plan to suck the energy out of Gotham City, he pushes her
out of a window and “kills” her, however she comes back to life as Catwoman.
When Selina Kyle and
Bruce Wayne meet, there is an instant attraction between the two of them. Selina
is very shy and timid and she resembles the classic stereotype of a secretary
with her big glasses, soft voice, and obedient nature. They have a sort of
light and innocent flirtation going on between the two of them. The two of them
are sort of shy around each other and eventually Bruce invites Selina over to
his house. This is a normal way for any relationship to start off as however,
its Selina and Bruce’s dual personalities which complicate their relationship.
Catwoman is Selina
Kyle’s oppressed dual personality unleashed. Her instability, anger, and want
of revenge is all in due part that she is fed up with how she has been
oppressed by Shreck. She is neither on Batman nor Penguin’s side as she is out
on her own seeking out her personal vengeance. For this reason, she is a threat
to Batman. He does not know what is she up to next, all he knows is that she
isn’t on his side. Batman sees her as a threat when she blows up one of
Shreck’s buildings because he notices how destructive she can be on her own
without any help.
In contrast to Selina
Kyle’s soft personality, Catwoman is confident, independent, intimidating,
malicious and fast moving. She is seductive as well as she wears a skintight
black suit and wears heels. She also shows how she is a sexual being when she
licks Batman’s face, which is the complete opposite of Selina Kyle.
Batman and Catwoman
have encounters of face-to-face combat where they are fighting each other. At
the end of their fighting they always end up face to face, exuding a violent
sexual tension fueled by hate. Catwoman at one point leaves a deep wound in
Batman’s side and he does the same on her arm. The complexity of their dual
personality relationship is shown when Selina comes over to Bruce’s house for a
date and they end up kissing end each is trying to cover up each one’s
injuries.
Selina Kyle’s
oppressed and angry psyche is revealed through Catwoman as she runs around the
streets of Gotham City with her own agenda without any fear to anyone or
anything which affects the way she acts around Bruce Wayne and Batman.
I agree with the fact that she had a dual personality. She struggled to decide which personality she wanted to be and I think thats what makes her so complex.
