I was glad when they introduced the
new character of Catwoman. Since I have
never seen Batman Returns, it came as a shock to me that Selina became
Catwoman. Catwoman is an extremely
complex character and it adds a good transition to the second Batman. I think
that the relationship between Batman and Catwoman and Selina and Bruce Wayne
was such a good plot twist. Selina
becomes Catwoman after being killed by Shreck.
She was a lonely secretary until she was brought to her limit of being
treated unfairly by Shreck. Selina was
not the type of woman that had a lot of guys in her life and as soon as she
became Catwoman her personality changed and she started to date Bruce. The first time that they met was when Selina
was working as a secretary in Shreck’s office and right then one could tell
that Bruce was interested in her.
The first
time that Batman and Catwoman met was when Selina went and set Shrecks building
on fire. Batman and her got into a huge
fight and ended up hurting each other.
They both received a cut, which we notice the next day when they share a
date unmasked. At this point though,
they still have not revealed themselves to each other. Even though Catwoman wants to take down
Batman, I think that she will always have an attraction for him no matter how
she feels about guys and heroes. She
became an extremely powerful woman and I think that she feels that now that she
is Catwoman she can take care of herself, but in reality Batman was not trying
to be enemies with her. I feel that
Catwoman/Selina cannot decide what she wants to be because she wants to be
evil, but she also wants to be good. Catwoman is always in distress and
struggling to pick a side. She likes to
make things complicated and we see that when she finds out that Bruce is
Batman. Even after him revealing
himself, she still wants to kill Shreck, but then she disappears, so it is hard
to be fairly certain what she wants to accomplish in terms of her dual relationship
with Batman/Bruce.
Totally agree with you on your opening line, Catwoman really spices the film. We get background information on The Penguin and Batman, but not so much on her. Although, her appearance in the beginning of the film does give us insight on what type of life she lived before she became Catwoman. I loved how you mentioned the scene when both characters received a wound from each other, then worried about showing the other when they were unmasked. That scene was one of my favorites because of the humor- where the audience knows and the characters don't. There's a certain word for the situation I just can't remember it. Anyway, great blog! -Gabby Buzaid
