Prevost-Edward Scissorhands
Common fairy tales such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast often show us that we must wrestle with our inner feelings of self-worth,hope, and love. Edward Scissorhands is a modern fairy tale, although there are no fairies or mystical creatures the hero in this movie is an outsider whose gentleness and and kind nature is foreign to the town he is brought in to. Edward (Johnny Depp) was created by a scientist (Vincent Price) who lived above a town in a castle on a hill. Before the scientist could replace his creations heavily equipped scissorands for actual human hands he passes. Edward stays alone in the castle for years, but is soon found by the local Avon lady, Deb. She takes him down to her colorful suburban town into her colorful suburban home. We see Edward's uncertainty and naive mind take over when he cannot sleep on a water bed, eat, drink. When news gets out of Edward's arrival the bored housewives of the suburban area begin to become curious and welcome Edward after their knowledge of his special talents with gardening, hair styling, and dog grooming. For a while Edward is right at home, but his naive ways show again when we witness him spur the sexual advantages of a promiscuous suburban housewife. Word began to travel that he sexually assaulted her and soon after he is framed for a break-in. After a long going run of love and devotion the town spontaneously turns that into hatred and runs Edward back into his hide away. The suburban area on the outside looks pleasant and "squeaky clean" but looks can be deceiving. Just as Edward's looks can come to make you believe he is evil, the looks of the suburban area seem pleasant, but the real evil is in the world we live in not the ones that seclude themselves from it. Fairy tales are scripted mirrors into the world we live in and Edward Scissorhands is a great description of that concept.
