Catwoman
is an incredibly complex development of Selina Kyle's personality created
after her boss, Max Shreck, throws her out of the window of his office, and she
miraculously survives. After surviving, Selina goes back to her house, stitches up a black leather costume, and adopts an incredibly sexualized persona. The first thing we see that Catwoman does is rescue a
woman from a mugger on the streets of Gotham. Then, after saving the victim, Catwoman turns on her
and tells her she needs to be able to defend herself. Selina Kyle actually
meets Batman before Catwoman is created, when Penguins thugs are rioting at the
lighting of the Gotham Christmas tree, hosted by Max Shreck. Batman ends up
saving her from being attacked by a thug, marking the start of their complex
relationship. The next time they meet, it is as Bruce Wayne after a meeting
with Max Shreck, with her as Selina Kyle. Selina is very different from the
subdued, overworked secretary we saw before Shreck threw her out his window.
Interestingly enough, Bruce ends up asking her out to dinner, which she agrees
to. The next time they meet, it is when Batman witnesses Selina Kyle blow up
part of the Shreck building, and they end up getting into a pretty brutal fight
where Batman tries incredibly hard not to kill Catwoman, but ends up dropping
her off of the side of a building. This is the point when Catwoman starts to
hate Batman, and ends up meeting with Penguin in an attempt to conspire against
Batman. This is paralleled by the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina
Kyle, who end up eating dinner at the Wayne house the night that Penguin
challenges the Mayor to re-light the Gotham City Christmas tree. Bruce Wayne and
Selina both desire the other, which is at complete contrast with how Catwoman desires
Batman dead because he interfered with her plans to wreck havoc and destroy the
Shreck building. They both end up running out on their date so that they can go
to city hall as their other personas, and end up getting into another fight.
Eventually, the Penguin betrays Catwoman, and Bruce and Selina end up
discovering each other’s dual persona at Max Shrecks party. They don’t have any
more character development as Bruce and Selina, because at the end of the
movie, Catwoman disappears, and Batman thinks her dead when the Penguins layer collapses.
I liked your point that her very hatred for women waiting for Batman to save them is complex because he once saved her when she was just Selina. I guess it is fueled by the abuse and disrespect she received while working for Shreck. I think she just hates the very idea of being the distressed female victim which could also explain why her more confident persona, Catwoman, is very openly sexual in black leather. Where as Vicky Vale as she is being saved in the last scene of Batman is depicted as very innocent in her long white dress.
