Perkal- Batman

A trickster is defined as someone who deceives or manipulates people.  The Joker definitely has all of the qualities of a trickster character.  From the beginning of the movie, one can already tell that he is up to no good as he was part of the group of guys who were the guys up to no good in Gotham.  The Joker originally became, The Joker, when he was thrown into chemicals that made his face become disorientated.  This was The Jokers first encounter with Batman.  After this incidence, The Joker gained his quality of being a trickster.  His main goal was to kill everyone and manipulate them into falling for his plan.  The last scene of the movie was his biggest plan.  He had balloons that had some type of chemical gas in it that would kill everyone and he lured them there by giving out free money.  He pretended that he was the cities friend and then once he realized that he had their trust he used it to his advantage.  I think that The Joker is more of a trickster than the last movie, Beetlejuice, because The Joker was able to manipulate people into becoming his followers and that is an important aspect of being a trickster.  The Joker has no problem hurting people and goes to any extent to get what he wants.  He even disfigures a woman’s face and wants to hurt Vicky’s as well.  He is a two faced person figuratively and literally, which makes gives him the title of a trickster.
est plan.

Tim Burton supports the role of a trickster because in his movie Beetlejuice and now, Batman, he has the recurring character with the quality of being a trickster.  I think in the way that he always has a similar evil character he supports the idea of having a manipulative character to go against the other type of character that he supports, which would be Batman, the hero.  In these two movies,  Beetlejuice and Batman, we have seen a theme of good and evil and light and dark.  I think that Tim Burton likes to incorporate the contrast of both of these issues and since the evil character never beats the hero, he is pro the hero.  Although, he is for the hero, I think that he likes some of the qualities of a trickster, which is why he incorporates it into his films.

  1. I like what you said about how the trickster likes to make followers. I never thought about that idea when evaluating the Joker and I think that is something very true in all tricksters.

  2. I agree with what you have said about the trickster and I agree with this statement: "The evil character never beats the hero, he is pro the hero.
