Turnage,Olivia -Sleepy Hallow

When comparing the Irving story and Tim Burton’s films, it is obvious that Tim Burton used both the title, character and gained ideas for the story plot to develop his own story. The sleepy hallow would not have been what it turned out to be without the base of the Irving story. Tim Burton used a character name Ichabod in his story, the same name from the sleepy Hollow. The two Ichabods had slight similar characteristics but they were not exactly congruent .Both of the ichabods stood out from the others that surrounded them. They were extraordinary people of their time. Relating back to Tim Burton, maybe this why he grasped on to Ichabods character from the Irving story, because Tim himself could relate to back to him, being that he stands out. Although the two characters were different compared to the society they lived in, there unusual ways also differed in the sense of the two ichabods character. The Ichabod in the Irving story the Ichabod was came off as bizarre, in a odd sense. People of in his community didn’t really pay attention to him and when they did they would joke at him. As for the character that Tim Burton Character he created, it was complete his extraordinary was opposite than the original. People were actually intrigued by him because they believed that he could help them. He was far from unnoticed as he was always snooping around, in order to find more clues. Their jobs are also different on interest and importance level. The original Ichabod works as a school teacher as the one that Tim Burton created, a murder investigator. When comparing the two Ichabods it seems as the original could easily be replaced, he was average and not superior as the next was. In the beginning of the film Sleepy Hallow the replicated Ichabod was held, as if he was superior and an held to high standards, as he was their only hope. The romance in the two, film and story differed. In the film love was actually found but as in the story I could not say the same. As in the story the girl Katrina laughed at him as he expressed her feelings for her. In the film it was actually opposite the romantic feelings were always expressed by the female role to Ichabod. In all I believe it is safe to say that Tim Burton just contradicted the ways of the characters in story to create the film Sleepy Hallow

  1. Great blog. I agree with your comparison of the main character and that they were sort of an outcast from society wether it were for what their beliefs were or just their social akwardness. Great job at depicting their characters and spotting the similarities and differences! You did really well using this prompt and stuck to the overarching question.
