Arceneaux-Planet of the Shmapes
In Planet of the Apes, there is a distinct lack of verbal communications between the humans and the Apes, primarily because the humans do not want to let the apes know that they are more intelligent than they let on. In the movie the main character is wounded in the throat but tries to make contact with the apes by sign language and by writing stuff down. In one attempt he tried to write a message to one of the apes but it was destroyed by one of the other humans. I think that the other human did this in order to protect him because if they were to find out that he was in fact not from that time and he was more intelligent they would have grabbed him and lobotomized him right away. In a way it is almost a curse that they cannot speak when they are with the apes. The apes experiment on those they deem "intelligent" which means that anyone who tries to speak up or act civilized will be killed most likely. It is the duality of species. We would probably do the same thing if we saw that a chimp was trying to speak to us or act civilized. They also treat humans as pets in the movie which is kind of weird considering I know of a person who has a monkey as a pet. I keep trying to imagine that situation where the monkey was the owner and the person was a pet. There was another scene where at the end of the movie the main character realizes what humans have done to the planet and starts to weep but yet his female companion says nothing and just looks on at him. She either doesn't speak because there is nothing to be said or she doesn't speak because she doesn't know how to. Either way she saved both of their lives by covering up his intelligence.
