Hasty, Anna- Big Fish

In the film Big Fish, Tim Burton merges the sunny character of Edward Bloom with the darker grotesque characters in the film by placing them in really ornate “fairy-tale” like scenarios. These grotesque characters are mixed with Edward Bloom in situations that would not typically, if ever, occur in real life. Personally, I believe these characters all like each other because they all bring something different to each other’s lives and Burton is a huge advocate of liking what is different. Edward brings these darker characters light into their lives and these darker characters offer Edward experiences that he would never experience if he had not met them previously due to the fact that he is from such a small town.
A scene that shows why these darker characters like Edward Bloom is shown later in the movie when Jenny is older and Edward comes back to visit Spectre for the second time. During his second visit, Edward sees that Spectre has fallen apart and so he works to put it back together. His final task in putting this town back together is repairing Jenny’s house, which has broken down and become extremely dark and dirty. Edward fixes the house, brightens it up, and makes it beautiful once again. This shows what Edward does for the darker and more grotesque characters; he fixes what is broken in their lives.
Even though these darker characters like Edward Bloom, Edward likes them back equally so. A scene that shows this is the scene in which he meets the two Siamese twins. When Edward meets these twins he is in Japan performing a dangerous mission for America in order to come back home to his wife Sandra as soon as possible. While he is there, he meets two woman attached at the hip living by performing small performances for men in the Japanese army. These women help Bloom escape from Japan and back to America so he can go back to his wife. These darker characters give Edward experience and help just like he gives the darker characters his experience and help.

  1. I think your blog is much like my blog, we made the same points. Edward likes to fix what is broken in the dark characters lives. That is something the dark characters appreciate about him, he takes the time out to treat them as any normal person would want to be treated. Your example of jenny's house being dark surprise dmd though, i did not think her house was all that dark when he retired to spectra as an adult. other than that good blog.

  2. You chose two good scenes to show how the grotesque and gothic characters and Edward Bloom got along. I agree with you and how the characters are more alike than opposite. They both are looking to helping one another. I especially like the first scene you chose His second visit to Spectre is more gothic and horrifying than his first, but he still stays and fixes the town just as he promised Jenny he would return. Big Fish is a ocnstant rivalry between cheerful and gothic, but we see a happy medium in certain scenes. Good job on your blog prompt you cover all of the general questions and gave great examples of scenes.
