Planet of the Apes creates many dualities: species, gender, civil liberties vs slavery, education vs illiteracy, bellicosity vs passivity, science vs primitivism. Discuss how one of the dualities mentioned, or one you choose yourself, helps to develop character through conflict. You must mention at least two scenes to support your analysis.
Civil Liberties vs. Slavery
Civil liberties are freedoms that provide an individual specific rights. Though the scope of the term differs amongst various countries, some examples of civil liberties include the freedom from slavery and forced labor, freedom from torture and death, the right to liberty and security. Slavery is the captivity of a race or a minority group. Civil liberties develop character because when characters of either side see through the eyes of the other it builds their character and allows them to see why they have to act they way they do. It builds conflict because the two conflicting sides grow more hatred towards each other A scene where we can the two conflicting sides character building is when the slave trader learns to be more compassion towards the humans and also the retired solider. we also see conflict through scenes of the human and apes fighting. Planet of the Apes is a great movie when comparing Civil liberties and slavary because there are such dominant sides of both and they are portrayed equally.
