Wadsworth- Ed Wood

Burton was born in August of 1958. He has great respect for a man that may be considered the worst director in the world. This man made thirty-two films in his life time. Burton got to live around the time that a lot of these films were made. While Burton may have been young for most of these he was around. He grew to admire Wood's films, hence why he made a film about him.
Tim Burton relates so well to Edward Wood Jr. because of how strange and how different he was. Wood may be considered "the world's worst film director," but Burton never saw him as this way. Burton loves the strange and unusual. This is exactly why Ed Wood would stand out to him. He made this biographical film because of how much this man inspired him. Burton is nowhere close to the worst director and may not have had any films that "bombed," but this film was one film that he never really made money off of. It was actually one of the largest high-profile flops of the year. Unlike Wood, Burton did have money to put into his major films he produced and he did get signed with major film producers, but he still felt this connection with Wood.
Just like Ed Wood made a family with the people he surrounded himself in the movie, Burton does the same. Burton felt that he never truly had a family so when he makes his films he uses the same crew in a lot of him films. Well as you could see in his film Ed Wood he uses Johnny Depp as his main character. Johnny Depp has started in EIGHT of Burton's Films. Just as well, there are many more characters that Burton uses in his films. He does this because these are the people he becomes close with and wants to spend time around. Burton makes these people his family by spending a lot of time around these people  Burton actually met his wife on the set of one of him films, Planet of the apes.
Also one way we know that Burton is truly a fan of Wood is because he actually uses some of Wood's scenes in his own movies. Burton relates so well to Wood and although he ended up much better in Hollywood then Wood, they still share this connection.

  1. You made some really great points that connect Burton to Wood. It shows their similarities in taste and life, and why Burton would be interested in making a film about Wood in the first place. Both are odd people seeking families and wanting to make movies the way they want to and no one can get in their way. Burton just happens to be better at it....
