Turnage,Olivia - Mars Attack

In Tim Burton film Mars Attack it seems that Burtons main purpose was to reveal the government ;revealing the government in aspects of military, capitalism and patriotism. Tim Burton did so by using the plot of aliens coming and invading the Earth. Beginning with the United States and spreading worldwide.  It began with officials showing captured photos of what they seen as UFO’S   to the president. He then immediately wanted to get involved with the unfamiliar creatures and welcome them to Earth. Before welcomed the President evaluated the situation by deterring whether he should the people of the states know what was going on. This gave one of Tim Burton’s views of the government. It showed how the government only allows the people they rule to let them know only what they want them to know. Revealing how some things are kept secret from common people.

When welcoming the aliens to the states the government makes a big seen and glamorizes the situation. They have a crowd of people, two news crews, and military official’s .In pre caution military men, who were supposed to, but failed to keep everyone safe.  By this ceremony it showed how our government is two faced how they make it seem as they want to share all known information to the people  and not hide anything from them. That was the purpose of the government allowing citizens and people who occupied to be present while greeting the aliens and allowing the interaction between the official and aliens to be recorded on national TV.

By the scene of welcoming the aliens it shows how at a time our military is joke. Meaning they are not as strong as the government advertises them to be, as they lost to only four aliens in the scene.   An to their knowledge they that the aliens could not breath oxygen only carbon dioxide so why not shoot at the aliens helmets? Because government withheld this information; if this was knowledgeable to the military it would have probably been a different outcome.

This scene shows patriotism; how Americans put their trust in government. By welcoming the aliens they believed that the government would already know the status and everything there is to know about the aliens. They trusted the government so much they believed that they would keep them safe if something was to go wrong.

Capitalism is shown when the greedy citizen is trying to make money from the new discovery of aliens. He comes up with the idea of making a space hotel, proposing this idea to different investor, what appeared to be different countries. Although there was giant attack of aliens all surrounding him and the rest of the world all the man was worried about was making the next dollar.

  1. great job on describing the scenes you felt had the most influence towards his audience on which were depicting the government. I especially enjoyed your picking of the welcoming scene and how it shows our goernment and army as foolish and naive and how we as citizens are even more so naive bcause we follow every demand. Also great job and description on how many of the normal citizens, majority of the population, is leeft in the dark on so many issues in our country. You did well on with this blog prompt!
