Perkal- Ed Wood

The movie Ed Wood by Tim Burton reminds me of Tim Burton because of the similarities between these two artists.  Tim Burton and Ed Wood seemed to face the same sort of problems in starting up their careers.  When deciding to create the movie, Ed Wood, Tim Burton wanted to pay homage to Ed Wood’s works because he appreciated how hard he tried and he wanted to honor the family and spark that made his movies even though his movies were seen as terrible.  In terms of similarities to Ed Wood and Tim Burton, they share the qualities of struggling to be accepted in society and succeeding in the movie business,

The first element that I noticed in Ed Wood is the recurring theme of the outcast and darkness, but contain a good message in the end.  Tim Burton’s films are always filled with strange and gruesome atmospheres.  Ed Wood is a dark movie about a failure of a director, but even though Wood did not achieve what he wanted to, he never gave up because he loved directing so much.  Tim Burton portrays the message that if you love something go for it no matter what the outcome may be.

Tim Burton and Ed Wood both had the struggle of trying to create a career making movies.  Ed Wood was rejected for his movies all the time and has the reputation of being the worst director ever.  Most of Ed Wood’s movies were seen as lost movies and received a lot of negative reactions toward his directing. People found Ed Wood’s films to be funny and continued to watch them because he never gave up no matter how much people claimed that they were not good.  In terms of Tim Burton, Disney rejected him because they were not sure what to do with his art.  His art was not the kind of art Disney was looking for because it was too dark and so he was not appreciated for his talent.

The last element of Ed Wood that pays homage to Tim Burton is the relationship between Vincent Price and Tim Burton, and Ed Wood and Bela Lugosi.  These people were seen as mentors to Ed Wood and Tim Burton and shared an extreme part in their lives.  I think that Tim Burton felt that since Bela was so important and such a big part in Wood’s life, that he should be incorporated into his film.

  1. Maggie, you bring up a great point about the connection between Tim Burton and Vincent Price and the connection between Ed Wood and Bela Lugosi. While watching the film, I did not even realize how the relationship between Wood and Lugosi paralleled the relationship Burton had with Price. Both pairs of men represent the mentor and the student, and Lugosi and Price represent huge parts of Wood’s and Burton’s respective lives. In Wood’s case, Lugosi is a movie star that Wood loves. On the other hand, Price helped inspire Burton through Price’s films. In both the case of Burton and Wood, working with their favorite stars helped both Burton and Wood bring their dreams into reality. This parallel goes along with the common theme of biographical criticism that is constantly found in Burton’s work. By including this theme of biographical criticism, Ed Wood becomes a true Tim Burton film.
