Turnage - Carl Jung with Tim BURTON VIEWS -voodoo girl

The poem that I choose by Tim Burton is called Voodoo Girl. The poem begins in saying “she has many colored pins sticking out her heart” automatically I can relate this to Tim Burton. By Tim burton saying colored pins I thinks of all of his emotions. Burton’s emotions that he experienced as a child. The pins representing all of the struggles and what he felt as tribulations he experienced and the colors representing the type of emotions that Tim Burton felt. Emotions as “abandonment, loss, and outsiderness”. .

Tim Burton uses these emotions within most if not all his literature work and film productions. As Carl Jung says this is a type of archetype meaning “models or tropes arising from collective unconsciousness”. As for burton I don’t see the unconsciousness as being literal but maybe as a self-conscious thing as he did not realize he was accepting these ways, ideas and emotions because it was seen as the norm to him because he has not experienced something different. Whereas this starts to incorporate into his work .

In the second part of Voodoo Girl Tim Burton writes “But she knows she has a curse on her,
a curse she cannot win.
For if someone gets
too close to her,

The pins stick farther in”

When Carl Jung talks about a lack of wholeness this segment of the poem greatly leads to connects Tim Burton to have. Carl Jung states “Archetypes are present in our psyches and help us reach wholeness. The process of moving towards wholeness is called individuation”. Relating back to the poem I believe that how Tim Burton once saw himself. Not necessarily having a curse but saying that to say he was different and was outcast. As he never blended in with the society that his parents allowed him to grow up in. When Burton wrote “ for if someone gets too close to her the pins stick farther in” , is either further explain the more he tries to fit in the more he stands out  In slight contrast it could also be saying the more someone gets to know him the weirder he seems and appears.

“She has many different zombies
who are deeply in her trance” after reading this it means in relation to the poem that she had different attributes to her almost saying different personalities , relating to what Jung said” individual must come to terms with and integrate into the self in the progress towards wholeness.” . Meaning her different attribute must be combined into one to create who she is. Like Tim Burton did he combined all his emotions into one and now put it to use in productions and writings

  1. You're comparison of the different colored pins to different kinds of emotions is awesome! I didn't think about that, but it's a very interesting point. Also you're idea that "...the pins stick farther in..." refers to trying to fit in making you stick out more is a great explaination. You could relate that to Edward Scissorhands. When he tries to help Kim and her friends break in (he's trying to fit in), he gets caught and ends up being ostracized.
